Hydrolysis – Hydrolysis is a process that produces several harmful compounds such as mono-sodium glutamate (MSG) which can lead to health problems. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires food manufacturers to list MSG as an ingredient when used in the preparation of packaged food. However, FDA regulations do NOT require the same labeling when a food contains hydrolyzed ingredients. This process of using an alternative ingredient as hydrolyzed to avoid labeling requirements is commonly known in the food industry as clean labeling. Clean labeling allows food manufacturers to list ingredients on food labels that consumers will not recognize. Clean labeling is a form of deception that relies on the naivete, misinformation or apathy of the general public. Additionally, clean labeling is a deception that prevents you from knowing and understanding what you really put into your body.

Soy Lecithin – Soy lecithin contains genetically modified soy. Genetically modified foods are bio-technically changed to increase yields and resistance to herbicides and insects. Soy lecithin contains compounds that may have negative effects on fertility and reproduction.

Natural Flavor – Natural flavors may sound better than chemical-laden artificial flavors but it turns out they are not actually all that different. Added flavoring, both natural and artificial, could contain anywhere from 50 to 100 unknown “proprietary” ingredients. The mixture will often have solvent and preservatives that make up 80 to 90 percent of the flavoring.

Palm Kernel Oil – Palm kernel oil must be extracted from the pit of the fleshy fruit of the African Oil Palm with a gasoline-like hydrocarbon solvent. It’s a cheap, unhealthy fat.

Evaporated Cane Juice – Natural sugar cane is brimming with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, fibers and phytonetrients that help the body digest the naturally occurring sugars. Evaporated cane juice is refined and during refinement, the sugar cane juice is pressed from the sugar cane and boiled at high temperatures. The boiling destroys the enzymes and many of the nutrients. The juice is then separated and left virtually void of nutrients. Because it is so far removed from its natural state, the body doesn’t recognize it as food, but rather a chemical, and responds accordingly.

Tapioca Syrup – Neither sugar nor tapioca syrup offers any significant health benefits. While it seems intuitive that more “natural” sweeteners, like organic tapioca syrup, would offer a healthier alternative to normal sugar, that’s not necessarily the case. Both options are loaded with calories but offer very little nutritional value.

Coloring – We associate certain colors with certain flavors, and the color of food can influence the perceived flavor where there is none. Chemical colors are often coal or petroleum based and mixed to “perfection” in laboratories using a lot of artificial processes.

Dextrin – Maltodextrin is a short-chain starch sugar used as a food additive. It is produced also by enzymatic hydrolysis from gelled starch and is usually found as a creamy white-hygroscopic spray dried powder. What?

Sucralose – This no-calorie sugar substitute has been found to cause a variety of harmful biological effects in the body. It may alter your insulin responses and blood sugar level and has been associated with inflammatory bowel disease. Sucralose reduces good gut bacteria and makes some medicines less effective by limiting the absorption of therapeutic drugs.

High Fructose Corn Syrup – Um, bad, bad, bad. Watch out “they” are going to change the name on you but it will still be the same artificial, processed, cheap and addictive chemical sweetener that it currently is.
